MESQUITE, Texas – December 18, 2008 – As temperatures begin to fall and the holidays are fast approaching, it’s time to start thinking about your summer vacation to the THE must-attend gaming event of the year - QuakeCon 2009! id Software and the QuakeCon organization has just announced that QuakeCon 2009, the world’s ultimate video game festival and party, will take place August 13 – 16, 2009, in Dallas, TX at the Hilton Anatole Hotel. As always, the event is FREE to all attendees thanks to the support of id Software, the QuakeCon volunteer staff, and the 2009 event sponsors and exhibitors.

QuakeCon will once again host North America’s largest BYOC (Bring-Your-Own-Computer) LAN party - with spots for nearly 3,000 gamers to hook their systems up and play on our world-class network. Of course, it wouldn’t be QuakeCon without the drama and intensity of the big-money pro tournaments, featuring id Software’s new free-to-play, web-based multiplayer game QUAKE LIVE. QuakeCon also offers non-stop fun and entertainment for those that don’t bring their own computer. The world’s leading gaming and technology companies will be on hand to demonstrate their latest hardware and software in the 35,000 square foot exhibit hall, and every day of QuakeCon is packed with contests, entertainment, announcements, panel discussions, and parties.

Online registration for QuakeCon will begin at 9:30pm EST / 6:30pm PST on March 6, 2009. Participation in the BYOC, tournaments, exhibits, conferences, and all other events is free of charge.

I am currently working on encoding high quality H264 versions of all the videos here on QuakeUnity. To start off, all the High Definition videos everyone have uploaded will be available for viewing in a higher quality. You can check out an example below:



For the time being, I have decided not to encode the high quality H264 videos in a HD resolution. It is not really a bandwidth issue on our end, but a bandwidth issue and CPU issue on our viewers end. The Flash player is not the most efficient H264 player, especially at higher resolutions.

So for now, all 720p videos here on the site will be encoded to a 1.2Mbps 640x360 MP4 file. After this process of offering higher quality versions of every video is done, I would really like to encode all the Flash video content here in h264. It is a lot more efficient than the h263 flv codec and should provide a lot better quality at the same size.

I was browsing the QuakeCon forums when I came across this video and I asked the author if he would upload it here to QuakeUnity. It's a pretty funny and professionally done video by Death-Toaster which gives you a view of his experience at this past QuakeCon. You'll get to check our the party elevators, Ninjas attacking people, and the BYOC.

Here on QuakeUnity, we tend to focus on certain aspects of QuakeCon such as the conferences and tournaments and neglect to give everyone an idea of how fun QuakeCon really is. This video will give you a good sense of what the event is really like.

Over a year after the public saw the first footage of id Software's upcoming "Rage" at QuakeCon 2007, you can finally download an official in-game trailer. It's the same trailer shown to the public at QuakeCon 2008 and featured on this site and many others via camcorder footage. Now you can experience "Rage" in a high definition H264 file.

Video of the Quake Live CTF championship match between billymaysdaze and rage at QuakeCon 2008 is now available.

The video includes both maps played by the teams; Q3CTF3 "The Stronghold" and Q3CTF2 "Troubled Waters" along with video of the award ceremony. Commentary for both maps are provided by Stuart "Django" Ewen and Rod "Slasher" Breslau.

Video of the championship match between SK-ZeRo4 and cypher in the first ever QuakeLive 1vs1 tournament at QuakeCon 2008. The video includes both matches played between ZeRo4 and cypher on qztourney7 'Furious Heights' and qztourney4 'Vertical Vengeance II' along with video of the award ceremony. Commentary for both maps are provided by Stuart "Django" Ewen and Rod "Slasher" Breslau. The video is available for download in high or low quality WMV and H264 files along with the option to stream the video via Flash in standard quality or a H264 high quality.

Two new videos are now available. The first is an exciting 2 map match between ZeRo4 and rawfuh. The second is a 3 map set of matches between ZeRo4 and griffin. Both matches include excellent commentary from Michal "Carmac" Blicharz, Rod "Slasher" Breslau, and Brian "destrukt" Flander, and Stuart "Django" Ewen.





And don't forget about the QuakeLive 1v1 and CTF finals videos. The 1v1 finals video has been edited and just needs to be rendered and uploaded. It will contain all the in-game footage of the 2 maps played between ZeRo4 and cypher along with video from main stage and award ceremony. Here's a sneak peak:

Getting the videos online has been harder than anticipated, but we are working hard on getting every game our shoutcasters covered gets online as soon as possible.
